30 years since the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster
The 30th anniversary is on Monday.

Out of all the many disasters that happened in the late 1980's, this one stood out for some reason.
One fella fell asleep and didn't close the bow doors. In less than a minute the whole ferry capsized and 193 people were killed.
A girl from our school in the year above was killed. She was only 17 iirc.

One of my good mates at the time lost his mum and sister on it. His dad died a year later he survived it.

I remember the girl at Hall Mead going Eddie.

It's just heartbreaking to read the repetition of surnames when families lost multiple members, especially this one

Sharon Horton, 28, of Essex. Passenger.

Rebecca Horton, 23 days, of Essex. Passenger.

How that mum must have scrapped to save her baby. Fucking awful to think about.

Sidney, yep that's her. Her name was Lea Pennicard.

RIP.

A boy at my school lost close family members, I later met a girl who lost two brothers. It seems idiotic now to leave such an important safety feature, closing the fucking ships doors, down to a single crew member.

Seems even more idiotic that that single crew member didn't do it!

First time I've ever heard about this. What an absolute tragedy.

A couple down our street died leaving behind a number of kids - can't believe it is 30 years

My old man used to work on the ferries in the 70s and 80s for the other firm sealink out of Dover. Remember him saying ferries quite often used to leave with the bow doors open if they were trying to make up time.
Terrible what happened

Was on a Townsend Thoresen boat in the 70s pulling into port on the other side and they opened the doors early to save time. Was scary seeing all that open water in front of you.

A bloke I knew from uni was on it with his wife and baby daughter. He just went to the loo and then it all started. He couldn't get back to them and they both died. They never found the body of the baby.

I had a friend who lost both parents, their only child, he was about 20 and cracked up drinking heavily picking fights and then emigrated to Melbourne for a new life, never heard from him again.

The amount of lorry drivers that 'just missed it' is phenomenal, almost as many that were in the SAS during the embassy siege.

On another note when we load PA rigs and have to turn a flight case upside down it's referred to as 'Belgium'

Lily Hammer 9:46 Mon Mar 6
Re: 30 years since the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster
I know we used to say we'll "flip this case Belgium," but is that really where it comes from, Joe?

Re: 30 years since the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster
Killed the town that did. Lot of local people lost their lives along with travellers. Dover was a bit of a dump anyway, but after that it never recovered. I'd moved away by then, but went to school or knew quite a few of the lads who went under. Townsend then very quickly rebranded itself as P&O the parent company.
